We want to see great cosplays at Retro Matsuri! Please keep this list of guidelines in mind.
1. Respect the Convention Rules
- Follow all venue and convention-specific policies, including weapons/prop guidelines, mask rules, and badge visibility. For a list of convention rules, click here.
2. Cosplay is Not Consent
- Never touch a cosplayer (or their costume) without explicit permission.
- Always ask before taking photos or videos, and respect their answer.
3. Be Mindful of Your Costume
- Ensure your cosplay is convention-appropriate (no excessive nudity, offensive symbols, etc.).
- Make sure it doesn’t block hallways or create hazards for others.
- Secure large props and check they follow our prop weapon policy.
4. Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks
- Costumes can get hot and exhausting—build in time to eat, drink, and rest.
5. Practice Good Hygiene
- Be mindful of personal cleanliness, especially when wearing makeup, wigs, or body paint.
- Use deodorant and consider bringing touch-up supplies for long days.
6. No Harassment or Bullying
- Do not insult others’ costumes, bodies, or cosplay choices. All skill levels and characters are welcome.
7. Keep It Clean in Public Spaces
- Avoid body paint or costume materials that rub off or leave a mess. If you use potentially messy materials, be mindful of the areas you are in and notify convention staff if you need assistance cleaning.
- Don’t block bathrooms or changing areas with large props or groups.
8. Respect Photography Spaces
- Don’t monopolize high-traffic photo areas.
- Be courteous to photographers and other cosplayers.
9. Label and Secure Your Props
- Label props with your name/contact info if possible.
- Keep them under control in crowds—avoid swinging or dragging items.
10. Be Kind and Supportive
- Compliment others, help out if someone needs a costume repair, and enjoy the shared creativity of RETRO MATSURI!
